The Village of Calumet is positioning itself for a more aggressive fight against blight.
In a press release, Village Manager Caleb Katz said that blight causes significant adverse effects that are felt across the entire community, including decreased property values, fewer economic development opportunities, and a loss of community pride.
Katz says Calumet’s anti-blight ordinance has recently been updated, and that dealing with blighted properties will be the Village Council’s number-one priority in 2020. Actions have already begun against some of the most dangerous situations, with a wider effort anticipated to pick up next spring.
Village Trustee Nathan Anderson notes that officials aren’t trying to punish property owners, but they are determined to see Calumet cleaned up and better maintained.
