Calumet Officials Search for Break-In Suspects

Calumet officials are looking to identify at least two people who broke into the Ruppe Department Store building recently.

On Thursday, a neighbor noticed the building had been entered. Destination Calumet officials confirmed the break-in, but found no one inside. The building was secured, and neighbors were asked to keep watch.

Friday morning, around 2:45, a video camera recorded two people entering and exiting the building numerous times. The person in the photo below may be one of the intruders.

The Ruppe Building is located in the 200 block of 5th Street. It is unoccupied. In a Facebook post, Destination Calumet officials warn that the building, which also housed the J.C. Penny store at one time, is in a state of disrepair, and is not safe to enter. While it has been stabilized to prevent collapse, there are areas inside which are not stable, and could become dangerous.

If you know the identity of the person in the video image, or see any suspicious activity at the building, please inform village officials, or call the State Police Calumet post.
