Calumet Man Dies After Suffering Medical Emergency While Driving

A Calumet man is dead after suffering a medical emergency while driving.

The Michigan State Police say an accident happened Thursday around 5:15 when 56-year-old Jeffrey Ruona was involved in a crash at Fourth Street and Scott Street in the Village of Calumet.

The investigation and statements from witnesses showed that Ruoma suffered a medical emergency while driving and lost control of his vehicle and accelerated.

He then left the roadway and struck a parked vehicle before coming to rest against a fence.

Ruoma was unresponsive when approached by witnesses. Lifesaving efforts were attempted by Calumet Township First Responders and Mercy EMS personnel before he was taken to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital where he was pronounced dead and was confirmed to have suffered from a medical condition.

The crash remains under investigation.
