Calumet Legion to Salute JROTC

UPDATE – As of late Monday morning, we are informed that tickets to attend the dinner have sold out.

Veterans Day is Friday, and Calumet will celebrate the 105th birthday of its historic high school Junior ROTC program.

American Legion Post 61 member David Crowley says the program is believed to be the second-oldest in the nation. Its establishment in 1917 actually predates the official founding of the JROTC…

It wasn’t until 1919 that Congress actually officially started the ROTC program for high schools. But, it was started by the school board, and they had to pay, you know, the whole cost of running it, where, once the government got into it, they subsidize it.

The program will be feted at Post 61’s annual Veterans Day dinner this Friday. Organizers are hoping to have some personal memories about JROTC to share…

We’re trying to get letters from former cadets that might have memories from being in it years ago, or how it might have affected their adult life.

Crowley notes that the main purpose of JROTC isn’t to prepare students for military service, it’s to build good citizenship in general. Students from Calumet Sacred Heart High School were also involved in the program.

Letters may be mailed to American Legion Post 61, PO Box 661, Laurium, MI 49913 or emailed to davidcrowley36@gmail.com.

Social hour for the dinner will begin at 5:30, with dinner at 6:30 and the program to follow. Tickets are $15.00 and can be purchased in advance at Copper World, the L&L Bar, and Rocky’s Bar, or by calling 906-337-4045 and leaving a message.
