The Calumet Art Center has been awarded a grant of $12,250 from the State of Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs (MCACA).
The grant was awarded through the MCACA peer review process and was one of 575 applications to compete for MCACA fiscal year 2018 funding.
These funds will allow us to complete the restoration of the exterior of the structure and begin to modify/update an existing restroom for handicapped accessibility. The project will provide extended life to an important historic building in the Downtown Historic District. Its location is at the entrance to the Historic Village of Calumet on the west end of Red Jacket Road and directly across from the Keweenaw National Historical Park Visitors Center and the entrance to the Downtown Historic District, which add to the prominence of the building and its prime location.
Organizations receiving a MCACA grant award are required to match those funds with other public and private dollars. Support of the project included $32,000 from the Keweenaw National Park Heritage and Americana Foundation grants. The Calumet Art Center also receives significant volunteer support and donations from the community.
The MCACA peer review process allows for each grant application to be competitively considered by a panel of in-state and out-of-state arts and culture professionals. The ensures the taxpayers, who support this project through legislative appropriations, and all other visitors or residents in Michigan will have access to the highest quality arts and cultural experiences.
