While a strike may be imminent by nurses at U.P. Health System—Marquette, there does not appear to be any danger of an interruption of health care service in the Keweenaw.
Duke Lifepoint issued a statement that although the Marquette hospital is currently engaged in contract negotiations with the Michigan Nurses Association, this process does not involve or impact in any way the teams at U.P. Health System—Portage.
A statement was also issued Wednesday in response to a vote by the nurses to authorize a strike in Marquette, saying they remain optimistic that they will reach a new collective bargaining agreement.
Negotiations have been ongoing since mid-April.
Last week, the Michigan Nurses Association filed a report with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, citing hundreds of unsafe patient care incidents that have occurred at the hospital since January first.
Nurses say those incidents are due to short staffing, which is the main component of their bargaining talks with the hospital.
