This year’s Labor Day Mackinac Bridge Walk will look much like last year’s. The bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic Monday from 6:30 am until noon, because of security concerns. No shuttle service will be provided for participants, but walkers will have several options. They can walk across – starting from either Mackinaw City or Saint Ignace – and arrange for their own transportation back. They can start on either side, walk part way up, then turn around and walk back. Or, they can walk all the way across, and all the way back. Mackinac Bridge Authority Executive Secretary Kim Nowack said they heard positive comments after last year’s walk, especially about the lack of vehicles on the bridge. This will be the 62nd year for the Labor Day Walk at Mackinac.
U.P. Health System-Portage is not holding its traditional walk across the Houghton-Hancock Bridge this year.
The annual very short bridge walk at Witz’s Marina in Skanee will start at 2:00 on Sunday. The Marina has also planned a fishing tournament, a community potluck, and live music.
