An 11-year-old boy died today when a sand dune where he was playing collapsed upon him.
State police troopers from the Negaunee Post say they found the boy buried in the sand at a roadside Lake Superior beach west of Autrain just after noon. The boy had been digging in an embankment when the sand above gave way.
First responders from Alger County EMS and the Alger County Sheriff’s Department administered aid. The boy was taken to Munising Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No further identification has been provided, except that he and his family were visiting from out of the area.
