Book On Lake Superior By MTU Professor Now Available

A new book is out that focuses on all things related to Lake Superior.

“Sustaining Lake Superior, An Extraordinary Lake In A Changing World” was written by Michigan Tech’s Dr. Nancy Langston.

Langston said, “People who don’t live in the Great Lakes basin think ‘Oh the Great Lakes, why do they matter?  Why does Lake Superior matter?  It’s just one lake.’  And I tell them, of course, it’s the biggest lake in the world and we’re at the head of a basin that contains 21 percent of the world’s fresh water and fresh water, clean water, is going to be more important in the future than oil or almost anything else we can think about.”

Her book covers a wide range of topics from the effects of the mining industry on the lake and current policies that govern it.

A book launch reception will be held at the Great Lakes Research Center in Houghton Wednesday from 4:30-6:30pm, where she will give a brief talk at 5:15, followed by a book signing at 5:45.

Copies of “Sustaining Lake Superior” will be available for purchase at a 25 percent discount, with proceeds supporting student advancement initiatives at the Great Lakes Research Center.
