Body Of Third Missing Boater Recovered

The last of the three missing boaters was recovered from Lake Superior today.

The victim, 43 years old Steven Chartre was recovered by staff from the Great Lakes Water Studies Institute at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City and Michigan Tech University research vessel Agassiz.

A remotely operated vehicle (ROV) was used to recover the victim in approximately 280 feet of water near the sunken boat in Keweenaw Bay.

Bruce’s Legacy and Crossman Consulting had located the boat and all three victims on Saturday, October 1, 2016.

61 year old Keith Karvonen and 9 year old Ethan Chartre were located and recovered from Lake Superior on Saturday.

The boaters left Chassell for a fishing trip on Lake Superior and did not return on September 17th.

Investigators are unable to determine exactly what caused the boat to sink.

Northwestern Michigan College and Michigan Tech University were assisted in the recovery today by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan State Police Calumet Post, and Mercy Ambulance.
