Body of Missing L’Anse Man Recovered from Truck

The body of a missing L’Anse man was discovered yesterday in Baraga County.

On Thursday, Northern Michigan University public safety officers contacted the Baraga County Sheriff’s Department and KBIC Tribal police about the well-being of 18-year-old Vergil Mongozid.

Mongozid had allegedly been involved in some kind of incident at NMU Wednesday.

After a wellness check at his residence in L’Anse revealed he had not recently been seen or heard from, law enforcement officials began a search.

Yesterday, State Police troopers from the Calumet post were called to US-41 near Baraga County Memorial Hospital to investigate a vehicle off the road. It was identified as Mongozid’s truck, and his body was recovered from inside the vehicle.

Investigators say it appears that the truck crashed in the early morning hours on Thursday.

The investigation continues.
