Congressman Jack Bergman Shows Support for U.S. and Michigan Hardwood Plywood by Visiting Timber Products Plant in Munising
Munising, Michigan – Representative Jack Bergman (R-MI), a member of the House Committee on Natural Resources, visited Timber Products’ hardwood plywood facility in Munising, MI – a member of the Coalition for Fair Trade of Hardwood Plywood. Members of the Timber Products’ executive leadership and plant staff were in attendance, and welcomed Rep. Bergman’s visit.
“Timber Products is a job creator here in Upper Michigan and we appreciate Congressman Bergman’s efforts to help in our trade case against Chinese hardwood plywood,” said Jon Johnson, General Manager. “There are hundreds of jobs at stake, and we’re fighting on Capitol Hill and the White House to secure a level playing field with fair trade.”
“It is imperative that we continue our efforts to eliminate illegal and illicit trade practices, especially in relation to the timber industry,” said Rep. Bergman. “The hardwood and plywood industries are critical to the Upper Peninsula. Congress must continue to ensure the protection of American jobs from unfair trade practices.”
The Department of Commerce is currently reviewing anti-dumping and countervailing duties on Chinese hardwood plywood products. Commerce has found preliminary dumping and subsidy levels of 65 percent or more on Chinese imports, and the International Trade Commission has preliminarily found that these dumped and subsidized Chinese imports have injured the U.S. industry.
