Be Prepared For Detours Due To Bridgefest Parade

Traffic in downtown Houghton will be somewhat congested Friday evening as the Bridgefest Parade makes its way across the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.

Lt. Roberts of the Houghton Police Department says steps are being taken to ease up the flow of traffic as much as possible.  “Do not park on Shelden Avenue. Find a side street. If you live nearby, walk,” he said.  “We like to keep that clear for pedestrian traffic so people can actually sit out a little further and watch the parade safely. It’s worked very well in the past but it does takes us a while to get some cars off the roads so if you could just remember right around 5:30pm, please remove your cars from Shelden Avenue and that would help us out immensely.”

Roads downtown will be closed starting at 6:45pm with traffic detours set up.  Lt. Roberts said, “If you’re coming into town on US-41 North, you’re going to be redirected by MacInnes Drive by Tech and then you’ll have to take Sharon Avenue all the way around to M-26 then come back down to get to the bridge. If you’re coming from the other way, especially downtown, we do have a detour onto Houghton Avenue that shoots you down to Fourth Street and then you come back onto M-26 there and we’ll get you two-way on the bridge. The southbound lanes of the bridge will be two-way traffic. The northbound will be parade detail.”

Bridgefest features activities on both sides of the canal this weekend, including live music and lots of great food down at Ray Kestner Waterfront Park.

The event culminates in the Jon Davis Memorial Fireworks Show on Saturday night.
