BCMH to Add Embedded VA Health Coordinator

Veterans will soon have more convenient access to healthcare in the Copper Country.

At last night’s Baraga County Commission meeting, Baraga County Memorial Hospital CEO Rob Stowe explained that the hospital will soon offer an embedded VA resource person on staff…

It’s going to be an LPN, who will help coordinate and identify vets, help them align with the resources that are available to them.

BCMH will become one of the first three hospitals in the nation to participate in the program, which could result in far fewer long trips to VA facilities for care.

Stowe said the VA recently changed its rules to allow veterans in rural areas to receive care at non-VA facilities closer to home. The new VA embedded staffer will help facilitate that…

One of the main barriers for that is that vets just don’t know how to fill out that paperwork, they don’t know that that’s even an option for them, so that’s a big part of this program is to align with them early in their visit, and help them understand that we can provide that care in our local community.
BCMH CEO Rob Stowe addresses the Baraga County Board.

Stowe said the hospital staffer will help coordinate care with the Oscar G. Johnson facility in Iron Mountain, and the VA clinic in Hancock.

At last night’s meeting, commissioners awarded a contract to Dave Whitman Construction to repair the roof and associated water leak damage at the District Court Emergency Entrance. The cost will be $11,873.

Commissioners voted to continue support of the UPSET West drug unit. They supported an effort being undertaken by the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region to establish a Community Development Corporation in the L’Anse area. The CDC could fill an important role in arranging for housing development, education, training and economic development.
