Bayside Village Confirms Seven COVID Deaths

The numbers in the most recent Western Upper Peninsula Health Department COVID-19 report are modest, although testing and reporting may have been slowed by the extended Thanksgiving holiday.

Since the previous update was released late Friday, just 37 more confirmed positives have been reported in the five-county region. 38 additional probable positives were also included. 23 of the confirmed positives came from Gogebic County, with 17 in Houghton County, and two in Ontonagon County. Baraga County’s total of confirmed positives was reduced by five.

Seven deaths were reported – all in Baraga County.

The Baraga County outbreak is centered at the Bayside Village Nursing Home. Their latest weekly report to the state includes seven deaths. 30 new positives among residents were reported, bringing the total number of confirmed cases at the 59-bed facility to 43. Four new confirmed cases increased the total among staff members to 21.

No new positives were reported at any of Houghton County’s nursing homes or long-term care facilities. Canal View reported one COVID-19-related death – its first of the pandemic. Canal View also reported one new confirmed staff member diagnosis. The Lighthouse at Hancock reported two new staff positives.
