Baraga County Fails to Sell Boat, Awards Park Project Contract

Baraga County’s old sheriff’s department boat is still for sale. The county recently purchased a new boat to patrol Keweenaw Bay, and offered its old one for sale. The minimum price was $9,000. The only bid came in at $5,000. At last night’s county board meeting, commissioners decided to hold on to the boat for now, and try again in the spring.

Commissioners accepted the resignation of Jim Dougovito from the boards of the Department of Health and Human Services, and Baraga County Memorial Hospital. Dougovito cited health concerns in relinquishing his positions. Commissioners expressed appreciation for his service. The county will look for a candidate for the DHHS board. The hospital board will make a recommendation for a new Trustee.

The county board accepted an offer from the Marquette firm of Sanders and Czapski to design and oversee the next phase of the Point Abbaye Park improvement project. It’s being funded by a $59,000 grant.
