Baraga County Commission Abandons Board Member Retirement Proposal

The Baraga County Commission this evening dropped a proposal that would have provided retirement benefits for some former board members.

The plan would have paid a monthly benefit of $10.00 for every year of service for former commissioners who had served at least 20 years on the board. It would also have provided two years of Medicare supplemental coverage.

Outgoing board chair Mike Koskinen has 40 years of service. He was defeated for reelection in November by Will Wiggins.

At this evening’s special meeting, Koskinen announced during the public comment section that the plan had been abandoned…

“Yeah, that’s been shelved and put aside, that’s not going to happen. That’s about as straight an answer as I can give you.”

No further explanation was offered as to why the plan was pulled. Because it was an agenda item, it did require a vote, and commissioners dismissed it unanimously.

Commissioners also confirmed their recent vote to reappoint Harold Miron to the Baraga County Road Commission. A procedural question had been raised about the original vote.
