The Baraga County Board of Commissioners has endorsed the proposed new regional environmental health code.
At last night’s meeting, Western Upper Peninsula Health Department Environmental Health Director Tanya Rule explained that the revised sewer and well code will provide more options for home and business owners…
The new code will also bring counties in the Western U.P. in line with those in the rest of the peninsula, which will make life easier for contractors who work across the region.
In other action, the board approved salary increases for probate court staffers, and for Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Jonathan Boever, who was recently named to the newly-created position of Jail Administrator.
The Board approved an application to the Department of Natural Resources for a $300,000 grant that would help fund improvements at the Point Abbaye Park. The grant would require a 30 percent local match.
Burt Mason was appointed to fill an open position on the Baraga County memorial Hospital Board of Directors. Commissioners expressed support for legislation proposed by State Senator Ed McBroom that would close off the legal loophole big corporations have been using to try to achieve significant property tax reductions.
And, the board decided to establish some open office hours for citizens to meet with commissioners. Board chair Gale Eilola said it would provide a less formal option for citizens to present concerns…
The tentative plan is to have at least one commissioner available at the county administration building between 2:00 and 4:00 in advance of each regular board meeting.
