Baraga County Board Backs Road Project Requests

The Baraga County Board of Commissioners has thrown its support behind four proposed road projects.

Last night, Road Commission engineer Doug Mills presented the same two proposals he had brought to the L’Anse Village Council on Monday – reconstruction of the Broad Street-Main Street corridor in L’Anse, and replacement of the aging road commission garage.

He also brought two additional proposals, including reconstruction of a lengthy stretch of the Skanee Road, and a plan to build an alternate route around the southern tip of Keweenaw Bay, which could be used if US-41 is blocked.

The proposals are being sent to U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters, and U.S. Representative Jack Bergman. Each of them has the opportunity to offer a handful of projects in a supplemental federal spending bill.

The chances of any of the Baraga County projects being included is slim, but, as the L’Anse Council noted Monday, you can’t win if you don’t try.
