Baraga County Agrees to Buy Loader for Road Commission

Baraga County will help the Baraga County Road Commission purchase a new loader.

At last night’s meeting county commissioners allocated $290,000 to assist with the purchase. Money will come from American Rescue Plan Act allocations.

Road Commission engineer Doug Mills said the loader is badly needed…

The last one we purchased was 2002. Prior to that was 1987. To have some nice piece of equipment that’s reliable and can be here in the county for emergencies, for road projects, for snow removal, and even for cutting brush – we’re going to add that attachment.

The dollar amount is equal to the estimated revenue lost to the Road Commission because of reduced transportation tax revenue during the pandemic.

Sheriff Joe Brogan reported that a drug counseling program for jail inmates is being expanded. He said that a counselor has been working with women for the past year…

Last month, we were notified that they now have a male counselor available, so he’ll be coming in also once a week to speak with the male population.

In other action, the Baraga County board…
• Approved advertising for bids to replace the roof on the Administration Building in L’Anse. A complete tear-off will be necessary because of water damage, and because there are already two layers of roofing on the building.
• Approved combining the positions of probation officer and district court magistrate. Judge Nicholas Daavettila explained that the consolidation will take place because of two upcoming retirements.
• Accepted the resignation of Jill Beeler from the Department of Health and Human Services Board, and thanked her for her service. Anyone interested in filling her place on the board should contact County Clerk Wendy Goodreau.
