Baraga County Adds Sheriff Vehicle – County Board Wrap

The Baraga County Sheriff’s Department will be getting a new patrol vehicle.

At last night’s meeting, county board members approved the purchase of a four-door pickup truck from Keweenaw Chevrolet. The vehicle will cost $55,146, not including the custom equipment that will need to be added for police use.

Board members also hired Kahkonen Excavating to plow snow this winter at the jail, the courthouse, and the administration building.

The board also named Democrat Al Punser and Republican Sue Bollech to the Board of Canvassers. They renewed the contract with Tri-County Public Defenders to provide legal defense for indigent defendants.

Road Commission Engineer Doug Mills reported that the county’s application for emergency relief money following heavy rains and flooding in April has been denied by the Federal Emergency Management Administration. An appeal is in process. The board approved a back-up application for state emergency funding, in case the FEMA application is unsuccessful.

Finally, board chair Gale Eilola announced that a public hearing will be held September 26th at 4:45 at the county building, to receive input on the proposed 2023-2024 budget. Adoption of the budget will be considered at a special board meeting following the hearing.
