The Finnish-American mid-winter celebration of Heikinpäivä is in full swing. Enrichment classes continue today with two workshops at the Finnish American Heritage Center.
“It’s povatica and I have to confess–I’m the least qualified cook in the room so I really don’t know much about what these are (baked good), but I understand from those that make them and those that have tasted them, it’s great fun to make these. I also understand it’s very hard to stop eating these,” said Dave Maki from the Finnish-American Reporter.
There’s also a Christmas tree carving class with Pete Olson today at 2:00 and 6:00pm. The cost is $15 for either of those workshops.
Contra Dancing takes place tomorrow evening at 6:45 then the ever-popular Nisu making workshop will be held Wednesday at 2:00 and 6:00pm. Maki said, “That’s something that you don’t have to be Finnish to enjoy, you don’t have to be Finnish to learn to make it, but it is truly identified as one of the Finnish-American favorites.”
An accordion workshop is scheduled for Thursday night at 6:00 and the big day—Saturday—features the Tori, the Heikinpäivä parade, the Polar Bear Dive and more.
