Auto insurance reform is moving forward after being passed by the Michigan Senate Tuesday. The legislation is a top priority for State Senator Ed McBroom who introduced the bill immediately after taking office in January.
On the senate floor, McBroom argued that Michigan residents pay the highest rates in the country. “I have people in my district who are literally able to move to Wisconsin, rent an apartment for their kids for the money they save on car insurance, and still have money to put in their pockets,” said McBroom.
The proposal would offer motorists a choice in the level of personal injury protection (PIP) coverage that best fits their needs. It would also seek to stamp out auto insurance fraud and legal abuses. The Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association would also be forced to be more transparent and accountable.
The bill now advances to the State House for consideration.
