In high school baseball yesterday
• Calumet split its twinbill against Negaunee, dropping the opener 18-7, and winning the nightcap 9-4.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell lost both of its games against Ironwood, 10-0 and 9-3.
In softball yesterday…
• Houghton swept Baraga, 21-8 and 12-2.
• Calumet split with Westwood, winning the opener 9-7 and dropping the nightcap 7-4.
In golf yesterday, at the Negaunee Range Bank Invitational, the Houghton boys tied with Kingsford for second place, with Marino Pisani tied for third individually. Full results were not reported.
On the golf schedule today, several local teams will compete at the West Iron County Invitational.
In track and field…
• The Division Three U.P. Regionals will be held today at Lake Linden.
The Houghton All Sports Boosters are wrapping up their spring raffle. Ticket sales ended yesterday. Winning tickets will be drawn today at 5:00 in the High School gym. Everyone is welcome to attend. You do not need to be present to win. The Boosters continue to need volunteers to help with concessions at spring events. Talk with any Booster Club member.
College Hockey
As expected, Augustana University will become the ninth team in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. The Vikings will join the league in the fall of 2023, which will be their first season in NCAA Division One competition. They will play a limited schedule over their first two seasons, and begin full conference play in the fall of 2025.
Augustana is located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It enrolls around 2,000 students. It will become Michigan Tech’s most distant conference opponent – slightly farther away than Bowling Green.
NHL
The NHL conference semifinals opened last night…
• In the Eastern Conference, the Lightning defeated the Panthers 4-1.
• In the Western Conference, the Avalanche edged the Blues 3-2 in overtime.
The other two series begin this evening…
• In the Eastern Conference, the Hurricanes entertain the Rangers.
• In the Western Conference, the Oilers visit the Flames.
NBA
The NBA Eastern Conference championship series began last night, with the Heat besting the Celtics 118-107.
The Mavericks visit the Warriors in the opening game of the Western Conference finals tonight.
The Detroit Pistons will have the fifth pick in the upcoming NBA draft. At last night’s lottery drawing, the Magic claimed the first pick. The Thunder got the second selection, followed by the Rockets and Kings.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers’ four-game win streak ended with an 8-1 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays last night. Beau Brieske was hit hard, giving up six runs on nine hits before leaving in the sixth inning. Jeimer Candelario homered.
The Tigers visit the Rays again this afternoon. Eduardo Rodriguez will pitch against Drew Rasmussen. Coverage will begin at 12:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
It appears that Detroit pitcher Michael Pineda will not need surgery to fix his broken finger. The best case scenario is that he could return to the rotation in a month.
The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Atlanta Braves 3-0 last evening. Adrian Houser took the tough-luck loss, giving up just a run on four hits over six innings.
The Brewers host the Braves again today. Corbin Burnes will start against Max Fried.
Milwaukee reliever J.C. Mejía has been suspended for 80 games after he tested positive for the steroid Stanozolol. Trevor Kelley has been called up from Nashville to take his place.
