Attorney General Dana Nessel has joined a coalition of 14 other Attorneys General, urging the review of a new rule allowing highly explosive materials to be transported by rail across the country.
The petition filed in the U. S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia circuit, is challenging the Trump Administration’s new rule which allows liquified natural gas to be transported by train.
Due to safety concerns, the practice has never before been allowed in the U. S.
Nessel went on to say the lack of safety measures proposed by this administration and the risks posed to our communities are serious red flags that she couldn’t overlook.
Liquified Natural Gas must be stored below -260 degrees, and should it escape from it’s container, expands rapidly to become a highly flammable and explosive cloud of gas.
All the Attorneys Generals listed on the complaint are asking the new rule be withdrawn, until public safety and climate implications could be more fully examined.
This is the latest in a long list of environmental challenges Nessel has joined against the Trump Administration.
She has also fought against rollbacks to the Clean Water Act and the Endangered Species Act.
