Aspirus Keweenaw To Give Away Free Kids’ Helmets For Bicycle Safety Month

LAURIUM, Mich. – Summer is on its way and that means more kids are taking to the streets on their bicycles. And while bike riding is a healthy, fun-in-the-sun activity for all ages, there are some risks for injury that go along with it. The good news is that many serious injuries can be prevented by wearing a helmet.

In recognition of National Bike Safety Month, Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital and Clinics is giving away free helmets for kids at their “Ride Up Drive Up” event this Saturday. The Ride Up Drive Up event takes place from 10 a.m. to noon at Aspirus Laurium Clinic in Laurium and Aspirus Houghton Clinic in Houghton. Children must be present and accompanied by an adult to receive a free helmet while supplies last at either clinic location. Fun giveaways and bike safety brochures will also be available.

“Our goal is to help prevent injury before it happens,” said Marlys Folly, RN, trauma coordinator for Aspirus Keweenaw. “By providing bike helmets to local children we can educate and encourage safety to prevent potential life-threatening injuries down the road.”

Ride Up Drive Up is part of Aspirus Keweenaw’s injury prevention program and is made possible by grant money from the 2018 Michigan Trauma System Development Project.
