Aspirus Handling Upward COVID Trend

Aspirus says it’s handling the COVID-19 load at its facilities in the Western U.P. and northern Wisconsin – for now.

In Wausau on Friday, Aspirus President and CEO Matt Heywood said their testing results showed a marked increase in cases several weeks ago, and levels have remained high ever since.

Aspirus President and CEO Matt Heywood points to graphs showing increased COVID-19 activity.

The percentage of those tested who are confirmed to have the coronavirus has also increased…

“For every test that we are conducting, almost a quarter of the people are being found to have COVID-19, which means that it’s becoming more and more prevalent in our communities.”

Heywood said their staff has been affected…

“We have about 214 employees that have COVID-19 or are suspected to have COVID-19.”

He also noted that earlier hopes that the pandemic might bypass sparsely-populated areas were misplaced…

“In a rural community, many of us though we could be exempt from COVID-19. I think we’re finding that that’s not the case.”

The newly-arrived cold weather will keep the pressure on…

“When we’re close together indoors, it will probably continue to be a challenge for the next few months.”

Heywood said they are seeing increased numbers of severe cases being transferred to their main facility in Wausau.

He assured that Aspirus is positioned to handle the current volume, but cautioned that further infection increases could challenge that.
