Aspirus Brings ‘Broken Heart Syndrome’ Event To Hundreds Of Women In The U.P.

UPPER PENINSULA, Mich. – There is such a thing as a broken heart. Brought on by extreme stress or anxiety from a traumatic event, like the loss of a loved one, the symptoms can be similar to a heart attack. And, according to health experts, women are more likely than men to experience one.

During American Heart Month in February, Aspirus hospitals in the Upper Peninsula are hosting a free Aspiring Women event titled “Broken Heart Syndrome” to help raise awareness of this real cardiac condition. Cardiologists from Aspirus Heart & Vascular will explain what broken heart syndrome is, why it mainly affects women, and why we’re seeing so much of it today.

All attendees will receive a certificate for a free lipid panel, a heart-healthy cookbook, and a special Aspiring Women gift. Women of all ages are encouraged to sign up to learn how to better manage and cope with stress to help reduce or prevent heart disease.

“Women tend to focus their attention on how everyone around them is feeling and they forget about themselves,” said Jenn Jenich-Laplander, Aspiring Women Coordinator for Aspirus. “What we’re hoping people take away from this event are helpful ways to keep their hearts healthy, their stress levels low, and take some time out for themselves.”

Broken Heart Syndrome is being hosted by the following Aspirus hospitals in the U.P.:

  • Aspirus Iron River | February 1 | George Young Recreational Complex, Iron River
  • Aspirus Keweenaw | February 10 | Michigan Tech Memorial Union Ballroom, Houghton
  • Aspirus Ironwood | February 27 | Aspirus Ironwood Clinic, Ironwood
  • Aspirus Ontonagon | February 28 | AmericInn Lodge & Suites, Silver City

Broken Heart Syndrome is free and advanced registration is required. For information about registration, times and locations, go to http://www.aspirus.org.
