Armed Suspect Sends Houghton Elementary School Into Lockdown

Houghton Elementary School went into lockdown Monday morning after police discovered a man in the school parking lot had a concealed weapon in his possession.

Officers with the Houghton City Police Department were dispatched to the school just before 9:30am on the report of a suspicious person.

Through their investigation, officers arrested a 30-year-old man for possession of marijuana and carrying a concealed weapon.

The school went into a shelter in place situation for the safety of the children.

Police say the suspect never made any threats toward the school nor they did not find any evidence that he had any intentions of harming anyone at the school.

The suspect will be arraigned in 97th District District Court.
