Another Rental License Denied

The Rental Housing Board in the city of Houghton continues to scrutinize applications for new rental licenses.

The latest request that was denied was for 106 West Douglass Avenue. Neighboring residents voiced their opposition to the license application after years of dealing with problems from renters under the previous owner.

The board was not aware of a rental license being held by the previous owner.

To make matters worse, the current owner admitted to previously having tenants living in the home without a rental license.

To even be considered for a license, the owner would need to add additional parking and finish painting, which he said would be done by mid-July.

The board voted 3-2 to deny the license at this time but would be open to reconsidering the request once the house is brought up to code.

Houghton residents are encouraged to continue pushing any sand from the winter road maintenance to the edge of the street.

The city will come by and scoop it up but ask the residents have it all out by the end of the month.

If you thought that was a bad winter, you were right.

Houghton City Manager Eric Waara shared with the city council that Houghton was named the snowiest city in Michigan for the past year, beating the next eligible city by 99 inches.

Motorists should be aware that there will be a change to the stop sign at the corner of Lakeshore Drive and Quincy Street near the Bridgeview Park in Houghton.

The intersection is somewhat unique in that there are stop signs for eastbound and northbound traffic but not for vehicles heading west.

The sign will be changed so that the east and west traffic will stop but not the traffic coming down the hill.

Parking permit fees in the city of Houghton will be going up slightly.

The city council voted to raise the rates at their regular meeting Wednesday.

The average cost to park in Houghton will still only be about $1 a day.

Proceeds from parking permits go toward road and parking lot maintenance, namely snow removal.

A public hearing to possibly raise the fines for parking violations will be held on June 13th.

Additional public hearings for the 2018-19 Budget and 2018-2024 Capital Improvement Plan will also be held on June 13th.
