New voting equipment will be used in all of Houghton County’s 31 precincts tomorrow.
Houghton County Clerk Jennifer Lorenz is asking voters to have patience when visiting the polls as only a few precincts have previously used this equipment.
Voters will be asked to use a Sharpie marker that will be provided when they vote in the polls. Using the Sharpies is necessary to avoid any smudging issues with the tabulator as the Sharpie dries the fastest.
When voters are at the tabulator to insert their ballot, they are asked to wait until the machine states their “ballot has been cast”. This tabulator now scans a picture of the ballot which can be used for possible canvassing in the future.
Voters will also be alerted by the tabulator for any errors in voting such as over voting or cross party voting. This improvement is meant to make sure every vote counts and this equipment gives the voter the opportunity to fix any errors.
