Additional Charges Filed in Holiday Station Crash

The preliminary examination for the man accused of crashing a semi-truck into the Holiday Gas Station in L’Anse last month has been rescheduled for next month.

Investigators say 22-year-old Dawaun Johnson, of University Park, Illinois, was drunk when he lost control on US-41 late on October 13th. The truck killed L’Anse resident Al Dantes, Jr. as it barreled through the pumps, and injured a station store employee when it smashed into the building.

Johnson is free on bail. He was originally charged with Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death. Two additional charges have since been added – Operating While Intoxicated Causing Serious Injury, and having an open alcohol container in the vehicle.

The additional charges brought about the delay in the preliminary exam, which was moved back to December 13th before Judge Nicholas Daavattila in 97th District Court in Baraga County.
