Accident closes US-41 outside of Chassell

Update at 9:30 PM:
US 41 reopens with one lane.

Update at 8:30 PM:
US-41 remains closed but MDOT officials hope to open the Sturgeon River Bridge soon. While fuel remains to be cleaned, the bridge will open one lane to traffic, with stop lights on both sides of the bridge.

From Chris Van Arsdale, Emergency Management Coordinator for Houghton County. Due to a major accident, US-41, near the Sturgeon River Bridge by Chassell, will be closed until late Saturday afternoon.

No official details have been reported, but allegedly a fuel truck has overturned in the accident and was leaking into the Sturgeon River. A Coast Guard crew has been dispatched to the scene to help cleanup what fuel has leaked into the river. This closure will continue until until this has happened and accident reconstructionists has cleared the scene.

MDOT has set up a detour and has dispatched road crews to make sure the new route is sanded and clear. Reportedly the best way around at this time is to travel through Tapiola to Pelkie and onto M-38.

Once again it will be some time before US-41 will be open to north and south traffic past the Sturgeon River Bridge.
