A Brief History of the Pine Mountain Music Festival

The Pine Mountain Music Festival, now in its 28th year, presents a season that adheres closely to the classical roots of its founder, Laura Jean Deming of the Chicago Lyric Opera, by presenting Bizet’s Carmen at the Rozsa Center for the Arts at Michigan Tech, June 28 and 30.

There is a road show of Carmen featuring the arias and dances presented in Iron Mountain and Marquette. There is a flamenco show called Alma Flamenca featuring Karyne Arys of Bordeaux and Paul Buttin from Paris, France. Kahlil Sabbagh, the cajon player from Los Angeles completes that troupe, in the historic Calumet and Crystal Theatres.

The favorites of the festival, The Bergonzi String Quartet, return for their 23rd year with the festival in Houghton, Iron Mountain and in Marquette, performing full concerts and free public performances in libraries and museums.

The UPSTARTS are four UP student performers from high schools and colleges who will perform to open the festival.

PMMF.ORG has the full list and times and venues for all performances. A $99 Family Pass entitles the holder to admittance in all performances across the U.P. for all members of the family! Pine Mountain is making a sincere effort to appeal to its loyal audience and to an anticipated new audience.

The Festival starts with the UPSTARTS and culminates with two full-orchestra performances of Carmen at the Rozsa Center in Houghton featuring Amanda Crider as Carmen, tenor Isaac Hurtado as Jose, soprano Heather Youngquist as Micaela and baritone Christopher Holmes as Escamillo. Karyne Arys, from Bordeaux, France, having just completed her new show, brings her artistry to the Copper Country in her American debut as a recognized expert in flamenco. She will join the cast of Carmen as the Gypsy dancer.
