60 Years & Counting: Ranger III Closing Out Another Season

HOUGHTON, MICH –  Ranger III ferry service connecting Houghton, MI to Isle Royale National Park completed 60 years of service this October. The Ranger III is a 165 foot long, 34 feet wide, 648 ton vessel that carries 128 passengers. An experienced nine-member crew takes great pride in maintaining the vessel and serving its passengers.

Thank you to all who submitted Ranger III memories via email and Instagram commemorating this milestone. A selection of submitted photos can be viewed online at the park’s photo gallery and will be shared via Facebook this winter.

Congratulations to Rhonyah Tober-Massie of Pelki, MI. Captain Rand Attaway selected her photo as the most captivating submission, and Rhonyah will receive 4 free tickets to a summer 2019 Keweenaw Waterway Cruise generously donated by the Isle Royale and Keweenaw Parks Association.

On November 1, Isle Royale National Park closes for the season. From November 1 through April 15 annually, Isle Royale and its surrounding islands close to all visitors. Lake Superior waters are open to boaters. All islands reopen April 16. The Houghton Visitor Center remains open Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pm all year.

The park begins taking reservations January 2, 2019 for Ranger III’s sixty-first season.
