2018 Isle Royale Teen Artists in Residence Art Exhibition

The following press release was issued by the Copper Country Community Arts Center:

Hancock- During the month of August the Youth Art Gallery at the Copper Country Community Arts Center will feature artwork by the 2018 Isle Royale National Park Teen Artists-in-Residence, Gabriel Clark (Charlotte, MI) and Kellan Heikkila, (Chassell, MI).

Gabriel Clark states, “My residency was one of the most amazing experiences of my life: waking up every morning and watching the sunrise over Lake Superior. I knew the day would be an adventure full of lessons and challenges that would improve my character as a person and as an artist. I wouldn’t exchange those experiences for the world. My teen artist experience influences my art: flowing glazes and rugged finishes.”

Kellan Heikkila states, “I work in a variety of media, including charcoal, ink, and gouache paint. Through my work, I try to deconstruct what I see and reassemble it in a way that shows its quirks and interesting bits. Art is my hobby; although I’m pursuing an career in engineering, I still plan to continue with art in the future.”

The opening reception and gallery talk is Saturday, August 3rd from noon-1pm. The public is welcome to attend and refreshments will be served.

This year marks the fourth year of Isle Royale National Park’s Teen Artist Exploration Program. The program is geared to all aspiring teen artists who want to develop their art through experiencing wilderness, and is open to all visual and performing artists, writers, and composers ages 13 to 18 at time of participation. Isle Royale National Park, Isle Royale & Keweenaw Parks Association, and the Copper Country Community Arts Council sponsor the program. For more information visit www.nps.gov/isro.

The Copper Country Community Arts Center is located at 126 Quincy Street in Hancock. Open hours are Tuesday-Friday 10am-6pm and Saturday 10am-2pm.
