13-Year-Old Girl Killed in Houghton County Snowmobile Crash

A 13-year-old Missouri girl was killed Saturday morning in a snowmobile crash in southern Houghton County.

State police investigators say the girl was traveling on Trail 8 near state highway M-28 just before noon, when she piloted her sled to the side of the trail to make room for oncoming snowmobile traffic to pass. Deep snow at the edge of the trail pulled the sled further to the side, which caused her to lose control, and hit a tree.

State Police troopers and other responders arriving at the scene rendered first aid for a severe head wound. She was transported by Bay Ambulance to Baraga County Memorial Hospital, where she died from the injury.

Investigators report that the girl was riding under the supervision of her father, who is also from Missouri.

Her death is the third resulting from snowmobile crashes in the U.P. this winter.

Covington Township First Responders and Dynamite Towing also assisted at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.
