1,000 Books Before Kindergarten at Portage Lake District Library

Reading out loud to pre-school aged children is one of the most important predictors of school success for children.

As part of its commitment to early literacy, the Portage Lake District Library invites families to participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten challenge.

This self-paced, year-round program is aimed at getting children ready to read by the time they are in kindergarten.

Reading 1,000 books to a child before kindergarten might sound daunting at first, but reading one book per day for three years will reach this goal.

The kick-off party for this project will be held this Saturday from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Families can sign up for the program and receive a folio that contains everything they need to get started including the first reading log sheet, book recommendations, and a bookmark.

Kids can also participate in Storytime and a craft project at 11:15 a.m. and again at 12:15 p.m.

For more information, please call the library at 482-4570.
