$1.5M Possible for Lake Linden Trail Repair

There could be more money coming to help repair damage done to our local trails by the 2018 Father’s Day Flood.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has recommended that $1.5 million dollars from the Land and Water Conservation Fund be allocated to help rebuild the ATV and snowmobile trail that runs from Dollar Bay to Lake Linden.

That stretch was washed out almost completely by the flood, and has been closed ever since.

It is the largest of 14 projects being recommended for funding in Michigan this year, and the only one in the Upper Peninsula.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund is supported by revenues from federal gas and oil development from the Gulf of Mexico. Money is distributed to the states through the U.S. Interior Department, which must approve the DNR’s recommendations.

The latest round of DNR Passport Grants has also been announced. The 14 approved projects include two in the Upper Peninsula – money to improve a park in the village of DeTour, and $73,300 to improve an Iron Ore Heritage Trail trailhead in Negaunee Township.

Passport Grant money comes from Recreation Passport fees collected along with the sale of Michigan vehicle license plates.
