Local government leaders generally praised the operation of their road commission and only a small minority would want them dissolved.
That’s according to a poll of more than 1,800 local government officials by the University of Michigan Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy.
67 percent of those surveyed were satisfied with the county road operation and 65 percent said it did high quality work.
Funding issues were a little more sensitive, with only 53 percent saying the county’s matching requirements for road work are fair.
Few wanted to see road commission work moved to the county commission, as pending legislation would allow.
The most support for eliminating road commissions came from city leaders, among whom 36 percent wanted to dissolve the commissions.
