Less Money Needed For Officer Training

The money needed for training police officers in Michigan has been reduced as the number of officers declines.

The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement says fewer police officers means fewer tickets are being written. A portion of every ticket written goes to the commission for education and training of police officers after they graduate from the academy.

The Michigan Justice Training Fund was established in 1982 and mandated a $5 surcharge on each ticket for police training.

The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement needs almost four-million dollars annually to operate.
