Police could administer a roadside drug test on motorists, under legislation headed to the full Senate.
State Senator Tom Casperson is the bill sponsor.
He says Michigan doesn’t currently have a good system in place for testing whether someone is abusing a drug.
His bill would allow officers who suspect a driver is under the influence to test that driver’s saliva for drugs.
The Escanaba Republican says he was prompted to introduce the measure after two people in his community were killed by a logging truck driver who was under the influence of drugs.
The legislation passed a Senate committee.
