It took several committee hearings and sit-downs with the state police and state department of transportation, but it appears Michigan’s speed limit is poised to increase in 2016 under legislation before a House committee.
State Representative Peter Pettalia, chairman of a House transportation committee, says under the agreement the speed limit would go up to 75 miles an hour on interstates and 60 miles an hour on some state highways.
Initially the legislation called for speed limits to go up to 80 and 65 respectively, but had to be drawn down to get the Michigan State Police and Michigan Department of Transportation on board.
His goal is to push the measures through the legislature and get them signed into law by the time people head off on summer vacations.
Lawmakers are currently on holiday break. They won’t be back in Lansing until after the first of the year.
