Legislation Introduced to Create an Active Shooter Alert

Legislation introduced in the Michigan House aims to keep people in the loop if there’s been a shooting in their area and the gunman is still on the loose.

State Representative Brandt Iden, R-Kalamazoo, is behind the bill, which sets up something similar to an amber alert.

He’s sponsoring the measure in response to last month’s shooting rampage in Kalamazoo that left six people dead and two people injured.

The shooting happened on a Saturday night. Iden says he’s heard from a number of people who didn’t know an armed man was on the loose in Kalamazoo and would have decided to stay home if they did.

Under the legislation, it would be up to the Michigan State Police to trigger the alert and to decide what information should be sent.

A similar bill has been introduced by State Representative Jon Hoadley, D-Kalamazoo.
