Legislation that aims to crack down on puppy mills and regulate large dog breeders in the state has cleared the Michigan House.
The measure would set statewide standards to stop shady dog breeders from bouncing from a county regulating dog breeders to one that doesn’t.
It requires large dog breeders who have at least 15 female dogs to register with the state and pay a $500 fee every year.
The bill also sets standards for how breeders treat their dogs and puppies and would require breeders who bring in puppies or kittens from another state to ensure both are up on their shots before they come in to Michigan.
The legislation now moves over to the Michigan Senate.
