Crews continue to investigate a reported discharge of an unknown substance from the site of a sunken barge near Kelley’s Island Shoal in Lake Erie.
The U.S. Coast Guard first discovered the leak Saturday.
The Unified Command, consisting of the U.S. Coast Guard and the Ohio EPA, says it is continuing to take all necessary actions to ensure the safety of the public and the environment.
U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class, Christopher Yaw, says a boat and dive teams are assessing and monitoring air quality and trying to obtain a sample of the product for testing.
Yaw says no fumes or discoloration have been found since the leak was discovered, and a 1,000 foot safety zone has been created around the area.
He says it appears the leak is a local threat.
