Lawmakers Pick Back Up On Data Center Bills

One of the big issues facing lawmakers in Lansing during their final week of session before adjourning for the holidays is a proposal to offer tax breaks to new and existing data centers in the state.

Nevada-based Switch wants the tax incentives before it agrees to open a data center in West Michigan.

However Governor Rick Snyder is still leery about that plan. He’s worried about the impact the tax breaks could have on the state’s budget and local government’s budgets.

The current proposal before the Michigan House includes eliminating the sales tax and use tax for new and existing data centers but not a sought after property tax exemption.

The Michigan Data Center Alliance, which represents data centers in the state, wants the property tax exemption included in the package saying doing so would create a level playing field.
