Lawmakers Debate Drop In Vaccination Waiver Requests

Two lawmakers on opposite sides of the immunization waiver debate are weighing in on a drastic drop in the number of parents who requested a waiver in 2015.

State Representative Pam Faris a Democrat, is eyeing legislation to make the rule requiring parents to request a waiver from their county public health department and talk to a nurse first a law.

She says a 39 percent drop in the number of vaccination waiver requests only bolsters her case.

State Representative Tom Hooker, on the hand, wants to walk back the rule.

He says the state Department of Health and Human Services overstepped its bounds by not going through the legislature first.

Hooker has introduced a bill to reverse the bill, which is awaiting a committee hearing.

Faris, meanwhile, has not introduced her bill yet.

The nearly 40 percent drop in waiver requests equates to about 8,000 kids getting vaccinated.
