Lawmakers Consider Bill Aimed at Curbing Teen Prescription Drug Overdoses

Preventing teenage prescription drug overdoses is the goal of a bill being considered by Michigan lawmakers.

State Representative Al Pscholka, a bill sponsor, says the legislation will exempt those under 21 from criminal penalties when trying to get medical help for themselves or another person for a prescription drug overdose.

Pscholka says the legislation is in response to the death of Watervliet teen Mason Mizwicki, who died of a methadone overdose at a New Year’s Eve party.

Pscholka says teens should not be afraid to seek help in a medical emergency.

The legislation is similar to an existing law that provides immunity to minors who report an alcohol-related medical emergency.

The bill is in a House committee.
