The Village of Laurium, along with project partners Michigan Department of Transportation and OHM Advisors, was recently presented with an Award of Excellence by the Michigan Concrete Association for the 2013 reconstruction of the M-26 Granitoid Concrete Pavement on Hecla Street and Third Street in Laurium. The Granitoid pavement in Laurium was originally built sometime around 1906-1908, according to an advertisement by the Blome Co. in the May 1909 issue of Concrete magazine. The majority of it had been covered up by asphalt for a number of years, but since the Village of Laurium is deemed a Historic District and in 2005 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it was decided that the street reconstruction should utilize a historic type of paving in the center of the village. The project was funded with a combination of federal enhancement grants, village of Laurium, and MDOT R&R funding.
